Little James For me, this is the most inspiring music Mr. Berne's done since his pair of Caos Totale CDs, which are my absolute favorites. I love improvisation, of course, but my ear seeks structure, and many bands provide the former without the latter. Mr. Berne delivers supremely composed structures to support the free conversations of the instruments. One feels like he's hearing the climax of an epic novel. Favorite track: Surface Noise.

EmmaH Addictive unique music. Listening to this is like being able to fluently understand a new language – then afterwards you’ve no idea what was said or what wonderful language it was. Loads of surprises and immersive sensations. Incredibly good.

John Cratchley I have been listening to Tim for forty years...more than half a lifetime...he embodies everything I want from a musician and composer...he has gained wisdom and it shows in his intense and provoking output...he sounds like nobody else and that is more than enough for me...

about

Intakt CD 340

Tim Berne recorded for Intakt Records for the first time in 2019 as the saxophonist in Michael Formanek’s Very Practical Trio with Mary Halvorson. Now the New York saxophonist, composer and bandleader presents a new CD with his ensemble Snakeoil. After five albums this is the first Snakeoil record to be released on Intakt. The band balances the possibilities of composition, improvisation and the tonal possibilities of an acoustic and electric playing jazz band in an unmistakable way. The Fantastic Mrs.10 is one of Snakeoil's most mature and at the same time most edgy CDs.
Guitarist Marc Ducret joins the core quartet of Tim Berne, Matt
Mitchell, Oscar Noriega and Ches Smith. The band’s sound is also influenced by Berne's musician cohort David Torn.
Tim Berne says in the liner notes “I think this is the best one yet. That’s a stupid thing to say, but it’s kind of a culmination. Ches, Matt, Oscar – it’s almost like we always forget what we did the last time out, and that’s a really healthy amnesia. There’s a dedication to moving ahead. They’re truly into it, and it motivates me.”
